(1) Serena Williams v (13) Lucie Safarova

Serena will try to win her 20-th Grand Slam title when she faces surprising first time Grand Slam finalist Lucie Safaroava in Saturday’s final. If she wins, Williams who is a winner here in 2002 and 2013, will tie Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam Titles, with Margaret Court’s 24 looking closer and closer.

The inconsistency of the American these two weeks continued with yet another come from behind win in the semifinals versus the Swiss Timea Bacsinzsky. This however was the most dramatic one to date, as Serena was visibly sick.

‘’I started to feel unwell around the third or forth round and I felt really terrible during the semis against Timea. I’m actually not sure how I got through the match and when it was over I just kind of collapsed. I couldn’t move. I saw the tournament doctor on site and since I came home I’ve been resting – I just could not practice today. I think I have some kind of flu which makes it tough, because I just need to rest and stay hydrated. I just need time and obviously don’t have a lot ‘’ – Serena told reporters.

Lucie Safarova continued her impressive run by crushing Ivanovic’s chances to come back to her first RG Final since 2008. Lucie battled through from 2-5 in Set 1 and served the match out on the second try.

“In the second set, when I realised I could finally be in the finals, I got a little bit tense there. And the game at 5-4, I was really over thinking and couldn’t really concentrate to be there in that moment,” she said.

“But when I lost serve, I shook it off and started to play aggressive again, and I served it out.”

And while Serena didn’t practice on Friday and is not expected to on Saturday either, Lucie played again in her off day. She and Bethanie Mattek Sands got through to the Women’s Doubles Final with a long and tight 3 set win over 9-th seed Hlavackova/Hradecka. They will now face Dellacqua/Shvedova for the title. Safarova can potentially make it a double with a singles/doubles title which will be something extraordinary but not impossible by any means.

“It’s slowly sinking in and it’s just amazing. The happiness is unreal.

The Head to head is one sided, 8-0 (Or even 10-0 for Serena, if you count Hopman Cup as well) 2-0 on Clay in which Lucie managed to only get 6 games combined in both defeats. The Czech is finally looking trustworthy on the mental side of the game and looks more in control of her emotions which have cost her close matches in the past when she was leading. With her lefty serve and deep shots she can test the best ones in the game, but it remains to be seen how she will react on the big occasion and under the spotlight while fighting for a major title. With Serena’s condition still uncertain Lucie will use her fitness as an advantage while trying to push the American, and do 1 step better than what the other 4 previous opponents failed to do over these 2 weeks – winning 2 sets versus Serena.
