After 2 weeks of quality and hard battles is time for the last match at this Roland Garros. The most deserved players to participate in this final are Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. First 2 seeds won their six matches and came as a winners of their halves of the draw. Tomorrow they will play their 34th match of their rivalry which started in 2006.
After yesterday’s win Novak has at least 4 finals in all Grand Slams and he will going to try to complete his Career Slam. Novak is on the final for the 4th time and 3rd consecutive one here in Paris . Last year when everything seemed perfect for his first title in Paris, plans were seriously demaged by Stan Wawrinka who won the final in 4 sets and postponed Nole’s quest. This year Novak won 1 clay title and played 1 more final. In Madrid he captured gets the win against Andy in 3-sets, but the brit took the revenge in Rome final and beat pretty tired Djokovic. With 5 titles this year so far, 43 wins and only 3 losses before this final, Nole looks in a perfect position to be the 8th tennis player who won all 4 Grand Slams at age of 29. On Friday world no.1 won easy his semifinal against the young Austrian Dominic Thiem 6/2 6/1 6/4 in 1hour 48minutes. “It was the best performance of the tournament” Djokovic said. He hit 15 winners and 15 unforced errors, but his opponent made 34 unforced ones. Novak allowed his opponent to win only 1 break point, while the Serb got 6 of 13. He also won more than 35% of 1st serve return points.Novak was very successful at the net and won 13 net points of 15. With only 1 dropped set until the final Novak wasted no time in the tournament and he is on the last stage again. After the match he said “Now I put myself in a position I wanted to be in ever since last year’s final,” Djokovic said. “Roland Garros is always high on the priority list when I start a season… and to be able to reach the finals is really special. I give myself another opportunity to win the trophy.”
The other finalist is Andy Murray. For the 1st time in his career he is on the final stage of Roland Garros and officially complete finals in all Grand Slam events. In Philippe-Chatrier Andy uspet former champion Stan Wawrinka in 4-sets 6/4 6/2 4/6 6/2. In his interview on the court he said “I’m extremely proud. I never expected to reach the final here, I’d always struggled on the clay and then in the past two years I’ve had some of my best results. I hope I can put on a good match for the crowd on Sunday. The good sign for Andy is that he won both 2 Grand Slams in a match against Novak – US Open 2012 and Wimbledon 2013. In the stats of his semifinal against Stan Murray hit 25 winners against 22 unforced errors and allowed to be broken on serve 1 time like Djokovic. Andy controlled the match most of the time but after being a little tense he lost the 3rd set in his service game, but in the 4th Murray was totally in the zone. The brit who had been 2 points from defeat in his first match against Stepanek now is on the final for the first time. “I knew today if I wanted to win I was going to have to play one of my best clay-court matches. Stan’s record here the past two years has been unbelievable. He was playing better every match here. I played one of my best matches today. I’m looking forward to the final now.” He said. This is Murray’s 10th Grand Slam final. He won only 2 of them. Is Roland Garros his tournament and can he beat his main opponent from the last years, we will see tomorrow.
Djokovic and Murray will face each other for 34th time in their careers. With only 10 wins, Murray looks in a little bit lower position. The best which can be reported for him is that Andy won their last meeting. It happened in Rome couple of weeks ago. In this match he beat world no.1 6/3 6/3 and defeated him for the first time since Canadian Masters last year. Novak and Andy played 1 match at Roland Garros. In last year semifinal Djokovic got the win in long 5-sets battle 6/3 6/3 5/7 5/7 6/1. On clay Novak has 4 wins and Andy has 1. About the final Novak said “One thing I know I can expect when I get on the court with him is it’s going to be a very physical battle.” For the upcoming battle Murray said “There is a lot riding on the match for both of us, we have had some really big battles in the Slams before on all the other surfaces. I’m sure it will be the same again on Sunday.”
Tomorrow on Philippe-Chatrier is the final battle against the most constant players in the tour. For their 5th meeting on this surface everything looks vaguely. Who will win his first French Open title? Hardware failures
