Roger Federer (SUI) d. Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) 6-3 6-4 at Halle ATP (GER) - Grass, Final <<
Federer will be looking to make an emphatic statement on his form coming into Wimbledon. If I were him, that is what I would be doing. Federer should win in straight sets and would look to dominate Kohlschreiber by breaking him early. 2-0 Federer.

crazyl - I dunno about anyone else, but I don't see a hope in hell for Kohly unfortunately. Federer looks back to his best after the pummeling that was the French Open final, and has beaten a nice array of players this week. He smashed the aggressive big-serving local Berrer, then had moments of patchiness early on but still cruised against the unusual serve/volley and drop-volley tactics of dirtballer Vacek ranked in the 300s. Then he switched on when he had to - did everything right against Baghdatis then notched his 58th consecutive win on grass with a thrashing of the in-form serve-volleyer Kiefer without losing serve yet again (hasn't dropped it all week) and getting the job done in an hour. Kohlschreiber has also looked impressive in beating three heavy hitters Haas, Soderling and Blake but will need to do more than slug it from the baseline if he hopes to win. In their previous meeting here three years ago, Fed was dominant off first and second serves and outgunned the German in the winners department. Kohli will need to look to venture to net as much as possible behind heavy or low slice approaches, and will need to be firing on the forehand wing so that he can fire it crosscourt to the Swiss' forehand wing on the run where he is prone to most errors. But Fed has looked switched on all week, looks hungry for his seocnd title of 08 and a nice entree for bigger things to come at SW19. Hard to see anything but a 2-0 result as the German crowd will be cheering as much for their adopted son Roger (a hero in Hamburg and Halle) as they wil for their own blood Phillip.

Kohlschreiber can at least point to the fact he has never been beaten in an ATP final but this will be just the third for the German. Federer is lining up in final number 75 and looking to take the 55th title of his career. Strangely the Swiss has only contested finals on clay this year losing three out of four and the win was by retirement, but he has been looking ominously good on what is his preferred surface, he hasn't dropped serve all week and was very upbeat about his ground game ''I was hitting a good ball from the baseline. The rhythm has come along nicely for me, I’m changing it up, slicing, coming in, staying back. I’m moving also well.'' said Federer after his match with Kiefer. Kohlschreiber has had a fantastic week and the German is beginning to play with more controlled aggression than he did in the past, when perhaps he was guilty of going for broke a little too often, he is a fantastic shotmaker off both wings but he will know himself he has a lot to do in this match. Kohlschreiber is an exciting player to watch and although he is sure to produce some moments of brilliance I just can't see him being able to sustain it against Federer who is claerly stepping up his game with an eye on the big grass prize.

Roger Federer (SUI) d. Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) 6-3 6-4 at Halle ATP (GER) - Grass, Final <<
Federer extended his winning streak on grass to 58 matches after beating Kiefer and will be looking to win this title for the 5th time in 5 attempts. No dropped sets so far for Roger with his other wins coming over Berrer, Vacek and Baghdatis. Kiefer could only manage to serve at 45% allowing Federer to dominate on his second ball. As mentioned by thedestroyer9 yesterday, Kiefer would in all likelihood create a few chances against the Federer serve, which he did but could not manage to convert on any of his 4 break point opportunities, Federer taking all 3 of his chances. Kohlschreiber has been very impressive this week in beating Benneteau, Haas, Soderling and Blake and is the first German finalist here since 2003. It was another good solid serving display form Philipp who won 70% on his second serve compared to just 45% from the American which was a crucial factor. Looking at the prices for this match, it offers little to get excited about from a betting perspective therefore I will not be parting with any of my money. I can’t see Kohlschreiber however as being the one to end his run in the lead up to the Championships. Kohlschreiber will need to produce an excellent serving display and perform out of his skin to keep up any hopes of dethroning the King of grass. Federer 1/18 Kohlschreiber 14/1.

Simple case of Blake not making the most of his opportunities. Converting only one of his four break opportunities while allowing four breaks to Kohly in only six opportunities. Good luck to Kohly against Federer in the final.

No love for the American in today's match? I know Kohly is on a roll, but the confidence gained by Blake upon staving off two competitors that he should have easily beaten will give him an extra boost. He will also be locked in from the start as he knows he cannot make the same mistakes against Kohly as he did Beck and Becker. The court indeed does favor both for service, but I believe blake to have a little better ground game and an overall better mental edge which should show through today. Now sitting at 2.35 you can help but put a moderate stake on the world #7 to come through in albeit a tight match with possibly a tiebreak or two.
