| | I was prepared to back Elias here, but obviously he is not a clay court player like many other players from his nation. Berrer also should struggle here, it's simply to slow of a surface for him, but should win this, even though I feel this could be a match that draws a lot of attention for different reasons. The safest thing is to avoid it, so no bet for me in this one. |

| | Elias has won a couple of futures events on hard courts one his year and took Guccione to a tiebreak in the Miami qualies, the Portugese wildacrd made the quarter finals of junior Winbledon last year and it does look as though his future lies on the faster surfaces. His overall 5-9 clay record suggests this is not his surface. Berrer has certainly faced some tough draws this year and will be pleased to get an easier than usual first round, his game adapts well enough to most surfaces, he has a fair serve and is sound enough off the ground and capable at net. You would expect Berrer to win this with something to spare but you may well here more of Elias in the future. |

| | Gastao Elias is an unknown portugese youngster and for me if you have good value i would put a nice bet on berrer whose form isnt too bad and should have it easy other the 17 year old Elias. |

| | Another youngster playing in his home country who will have a hard time against German Michael Berrer. Berrer has had a good year so far and a few decent wins and will put Elias away here with much in reserve. Berrer has a good serve and accurate groundstrokes and will be too powerful in allround really. |

| | Local hope Gastao Elias qualified beating nothing in 06 before being trounced by Tursunov in the opening round, then suffered a similar fate against Montcourt in first round of qualies last year. He receives a wildcard this time but it doesn't get any easier against the capable Michael Berrer. Elias is not seen often on the circuit and is still only a tender 17 years of age, but has a very weak serve and groundstrokes that lack real penetration. I've watched him play a couple of clay matches and the standard is not there as yet, and the lefty Berrer edges him in all departments. The German won one challenger title on clay last year (And made one other final and two semis), and this should be a welcome return to form after struggling on the US hardcourts. His big serve and glorios single handed backhand should be enough to handle the youngster. |
