| | Groth is an aspiring young Aussie who loves the hardcourts that are conjucive to his game - he boasts a big serve, can back it up at the net and likes to be aggressive off the ground. His lead-up form is solid without being spectacular and he has beaten the likes of Sela, Tipsarevic, KEndrick and Moodie this year suggesting he'll be far too hot for the erratic Kamke who prefers the dirt and is just a career 4-7 on this terrain. |

| | Odds tempted me to back Groth with a small stake as Simon, however good he is from the baseline, will face a giant serve and may falter against it. The game is about to begin so my opinion may come late, but I felt the urge to state it anyway :) |

| | Simon proved too good for Young as he moved his grass record a little nearer parity at 7-8 the Frenchman held throughout and won a decent 42% on return. Groth continued his recent run on the grass with a win over local Baker with some big serving, and returned some Karlovic like stats in that department 20 aces and 82% won behind first ball. The Aussie has been involved in four tie-breaks this week suggesting he isn't going to be easy to break and his win over Tipsarevic in qualies shows he has to be respected on this surface. I'm not sure I'd want to back Simon at current odds despite the class difference and his obvious superiority off the ground but once again overs on the games looks as though it might be the call. |

| | Gilles Simon was far too good for Donald Young yesterday, while big Aussie youngster Samuel Groth continued his strong run on serve as he proved too solid in that department for the British comeback kid Jamie Baker. Simon ended a run of two outs at the French and Warsaw, which incidently followed a title in Casablanca, and the Frenchman is looking to go one better here than he did last year when he lost narrowly to Karlovic. He has the serve to go with Groth and is a lot more potent from the baseline - he is very quick and defends well, but has the heavy artillery off either wing to give the Aussie loads of problems. Groth will need to serve at a high percentage and come in with even better efficiency, otherwise he will be toast as Simon has competed very well with better big-serving grass-type players in Fish, Pavel, Karlovic, Roddick and Joachim Johansson. This is Sam's acid test to date on the tour having only once previous played an opponent inside the top 50, and the experience and all-rounded edge of Simon should be suffice to overcome the grass pedigree of Groth in a tough affair. |

| | Summed up well by bullet here and it was definitely a shame to see Jamie go down when he was in some great form. He took a set off Karlovic at the AO, and earned a good victory over Caller at Davis Cup level before being sent to Florida for the intensive care. Britain's Davis Cup coach John Lloyd has backed the Scot to make it into the top 100 (pressure for you), however of some concern would be the fact that medical experts told Baker that he would not be ready in time for Wimbledon. Is it rushed - or is it a surprise recovery? It remains to be seen, but fellow Scot Jamie Murray was reported as stating he was 'lucky to be alive'. Samuel Groth stands at a mammoth 194cm - some 5 inches to the good of Baker - and 93kg, boasts a big serve not surprisingly, and shows a love for the grass where he did well as a junior and ousted top seed in qualifying Janko Tipsarevic (who took a set off Djokovic at Queens). Baker's record on the grass is a mere 9-14, including 4 consecutive losses his current streak, and has fallen to big-serving types in Cilic, Del Potro, Bogdanovic, Seppi, Fish and Bloomfield in amongst them. Groth has not looked like losing his serve in the past two matches, and with his opponent likely to need the run in terms of match fitness, he will be a distinct favourite and should get suffice opportunities on the Scot's delivery to be able to serve himself to another victory. |

| | Baker will make a welcome return to the British tennis scene after serious illness.
The Scot, was enjoying one of the best periods of his career after following up his first victory in a Davis Cup match against Argentina beating Calleri on clay in February with two Futures titles and had taken a set off Karlovic at the Aussie Open.
He spent three days in intensive care in Florida after contracting a life-threatening virus and has not played a tour match since March. Baker also beat Guccione in qualifying for this event last year and is certainly one of the better British prospects (we don't have many). Groth overcame a hiccup in first round qualifying when dropping a set to Bubka but followed that up with a superb win over Tipsarevic and a straight sets win over Nielsen. It is difficult to know just what shape Baker is in after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines but Groth's recent win over Tipsarevic looks a good effort and would entitle him to favouritism at this time.
