Karatantcheva, a former world number 35 and the seventh youngest French Open quarter finallist in the modern era, has improved her ranking up to 243 which is her highest after her comeback from a 2-year drug suspension. The only women's player to be ousted for steroid abuse, the Bulgarian is keen to clear her name and is going the right way about it with her on-court succeses. She has already made 2 ITF finals this year on the dirt, losing one to the red-hot Benesova and the other to a rising Argentinian in Soledad Esperon. Wins over Tatishvili, Albanese, Sanchez, Niculescu and Klaffner show this young girl has ability, and from what I've seen of her in recent months she has matured as a person and a player since her ban was lifted on January 1. She is an impressive 24-5 career lifetime record on clay, and got the better of the capable Elena Baltacha of Great Britain in the opening round. Medina Garrigues, the top seed here and renowned clay dog, had a tough time of it against compatriot Dominguez Lino before pulling through in the third. She has struggled of late and was a disappointing loser to Perebiynis only days after being so close to knocking off Sharapova in Amelia Island and will be keen for an improved performance here. She's as good defensively as they come, but sometimes is accused of being a little too passive because she has proven she has the weaponry to take the game to her opponents. Karatantcheva is following much in the footsteps of Capriati - a child prodigy who strikes troubles - not only the drugs, but she was struck down by image problems that saw her with tattoos, piercings and even a pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage which sent her into depression. Now back with a new lease on life, the very talented Bulgarian faces a very tough challenge against Medina but I think she can push it to a decider though I would expect the top seed to prevail if it got close.
