| | Black has been given a wild-card here and will be interesting to see how she gets on. Very little singles activity this year and nothing to write home about when she has played. Of course she is best known for her doubles where she resides at No.1 in the ranking. And she has been a top 50 player in the past at singles. Puchkova, a young russian (very good looking!!!) is currently close to breaking top 100 (again) as was in the top 50 in 2006. This year she has beaten the likes of Mattek and Kudryavtseva so has ability. Current form is not good but a think on singles matches alone should have enough to defeat Black and let her concentrate on the doubles. |

| | Puchkova has finally got some sort of form under her belt after a final a month ago but she did lose to a horribly low-ranked player in that decider and has beaten only URzula Radwanska (having a horror 2008) and 37-yo Brenda Schultz McCarthy (also in losing form) in the first two rounds. She is not great on the clay due to her heavy erratic style, and her movement is also exposed on the dirt. They are all assets that the Spaniard clay dog has - she is very good around the court and generates good power from those massive thighs she has. Wins over Fedossova, Peng, Domachowska, Gallovits and Castano this year prove she is really starting to blossom, and her Fed Cup heroics for Spain show she is really up for a fight. She looks the bet of the day to me. |

| | Consistency will prove the order of the day for Agie's sister Urzula. The young Pole is the top junior but has been struggling of late, though she will be pleased at opposing the erratic Russian Puchkova (formerly Poutchkova) who is no stranger to error-riddled affairs. I wouldn't back the Russian if she was the last thing on earth, so value will be with the youngster here who has defeated players the calibre of Razzano, Cirstea, Bychkova as well as narrow losses to Myskina, Errani, Wickmayer and Zakopalova. |

| | It seems as though Olga Poutchkova is more focused on her other profession which is modelling than her tennis. She seems a less talented and less successful version of Anna Kournikova, and has lost her last seven matches. She's not played on clay since last year (where she went 3 from 8). She was a talented junior who was world number one at under 12's but has not come on. She has a fairly good backhand but is just too erratic, and is going to have so many problems against the wily veteran Pascual. The successful doubles player and smart court tactician has dealth easily with the Russian in their previous two meetings which were both late last year and on a court surface that should have favoured the Russian. Back on the clay where Pascual is more suited and not left exposed against the heavy hitting, she will be able to plonk the ball back into play and use varying angles and speed to put off Poutchkova who is just terribly out of form. |

| | Bookmakers will be pressuring punters to bet on this one - because anything could happen. Poutchkova burst on the scene a while ago with a flashy flat style of play, but that has proved her undoing as she is just too inconsistent and doesn't hit the ball with enough margin for error over the net. She is also quite restricted in her movement as she is a tall-ish girl, whilst Australia's Casey Dellacqua seems to be suffering a hangover after her fairytale story at the Aus Open. The lefty from Down Under disappointed in Fed Cup and in Pattaya where she was highly fancied, whilst the Russian has lost 3 matches on end. Casey has a pretty decent serve that is capable of getting her out of trouble at times, and has some fierce groundstrokes especially on the backhand side. Her forehand wing is technically flawed and is likely to give way in a long rally, but unlike her opponent she is not afraid to come into net and therefore looks like she has a bit more variety to her game. Poutchkova can cause an upset if her shots hit the spot, but Casey is more consistent and her form and development over the past 12 months completely outweighs that of Olga who seems to be somewhat on the decline. |

| | Tanasugarn might have beaten the 8th seed first up, but was nowhere near an upset as she is in rejuvinated form and has always done well playing at her home tournament. She smashed Rodionova in just over an hour, and the long-standing Thai number one veteran will fancy her chances against the flat and erratic style of Olga Poutchkova. The Russian is tall and quite strongly built, but she hits off both wings with limited top spin and is therefore prone to higher unforced error counts if not all is going well. Tanasugarn has always had good success here in front of adoring fans, and I see great value in here taking this one without dropping a set as she will run Poutchkova ragged. |

| | Henin was on her merry way against Nakamura, completely overpowering and outsmarting her much less ranked and quite undersized Japanese opponent. In Poutchkova, she faces a much taller and physically stronger opponent, but one who doesn't bring as much energy to the court. The flat hitting style of the Russian will not augur well as she takes on the finesse, power, accuracy and determination of one of the most dominant women's players in history. Henin in a canter. |

| | Monique Adamczak has good fighting qualities, evidencing by he mtch against Vesnina on the Gold Coast where she trailled 2-5 in the final set before prevailing 7-5. That was a big scalp for her, with Vesnina a good quality player just below the upper echelon of women's tennis. She then lost 3 and 2 to Li Na, the eventual champion who was in sparkling form. Olga Poutchkova, another Russian, is always a risk. The lanky blonde is very erratic player with questionable court movement, and hits the ball eerily similar to Mara Santangelo - unorthodox and flat, with little topspin and therefore not much margin for error. If her radar is off, she is very vulnerable. Their previous meetig saw Poutchkova prevail in two very tough sets, but in my opinion Adamczak has probably improve a touch more. With the home support behind her, she'll get a big chance at an upset and a chance to play centre court against Henin in the 2nd round. |
