| | Santoro has been a first round loser in straight sets in each of his last 3 events to Vliegen, Seppi and Kunitsyn in a challenger in Bordeaux. Mayer was beaten by Benneteau last time out in the first round in Casablanca. I used to really like Mayer years ago and he is similar to the magician in some ways as he uses lots of different slices and spins particurarly on the backhand wing. He's a funny player to watch with his unusual style and he executes the drop shot very well. Santoro has no big weapons up his sleeve and is content to rally and retrieve and I think there is big value in the German here. Mayer when on form is a force and I'm prepered to have a go at these odds. Santoro 4/7 Mayer 8/5. |

| | bullet is on the money again here - Mayer is definitely a shadow of his former self, and despite beating Benneteau on this surface at Monte Carlo three years ago, will go in a heavy underdog here. Benneteau has been mixing it with the likes of Moya, Massu, Minar, Tsonga and Roddick of late. The Frenchman is a more-than-capable baseliner who can be hot and cold on his day due to his attacking style, and despite a bit of a lacklustre time of it on the dirt in the past 18 months, gets his big chance here against a guttered Mayer. The German has lost 6 of his past 8 on the dirt, 10 of his last 12 on the tour, and has suffered leg injuries and a bout of food poisoning to add to his woes. Benneteau was a semi finallist here in 04 and a quarter finallist last year, and with a great recent record (7-3) against big servers should find himself the bet of the day to win in 2 sets against Florian. |

| | Benneteau had his chance to beat Moya in Hamburg and blew it but that is reasonable form if taken at face value. Mayer has really been in a rut this year and broke a losing spell of nine consecutive defeats by dropping down to a challenger. Who would believe the German was a Wimbledon quarter finalist back in 2004 as a promising 20 year old, we can safely say he hasn't trained on......to use a racing parlance! |

| | Big-serving German Florian Mayer has been in the wars lately having suffered leg and knee problems earlier in the year then succumbing to a bout of food poisoning in the Sunrise challenger event only a month ago. Between those lines, he's lost 8 straight matches including his only lead-up clay match to Gabashvili in Estoril wwhich doesn't make for good reading. He has some power on the groundstrokes but struggles for consistency, and his disappointing clay record is down to his limited movement. Rochus is more well-rounded player with a very good game for this surface - he has a decent serve but his main assets are his lateral movement and the consistency off both wings...I really like his balance between defence and attack. He has a pretty poor clay record for some reason, but he did take a set off Roger in Estoril last week which will boost his confidence. He has beaten Ljubicic, Berdych and Monfils at this event in previous years which means he doesn't mind opposing the big server in Monte Carlo - so that's enough for me to suggest he'll topple the out-of-touch German in a fairly lop-sided affair. |

| | Mayer couldn't come into this match in worse form and is on a seven match losing streak and with a season record of 3-10. Thta includes a loss to Gabashvilli on carpet. I'm not sure this is Gabashvilli's best surface but he has beaten Mayer on it in the past. Mayer made the semis here back in '04' but he was certainly playing better then. Mayer is not the best of defensive players and that is a bit of a minus on this surface unless you have a player making plenty of unforced errors. Gabashvilli like sto go for his shots and you would think it will be down to how the Russian executes as to how this match will pan out. If Gabashvilli is hitting the target he should come out on top. |

| | When i've watched Mayer he's either brilliant or terrible. When he is firing he can hit winners all day but he has his off days too where things don't tend to come off. The same goes for Gabashvili aswell really he can be brilliant or poor but in this match i'm siding with Gabashvili. |

| | Mayer is more suited on a hard court where his big serve and heavier groundstrokes are more conjuvice, but he didn't have the worst season on clay last year making it to 3 finals albeit on the lower challenger circuit. He suffered from food poisoning forcing him out of Sunrise a month ago, and his consequent apperance netted a narrow loss to Mahut on the hard court. Gabashvilli, the flashy Russian baseliner, holds a 2-1 h2h record over the German but they are 1-1 on this surface. The Russian has lost 4 of his last 5, and hasn't played on clay since last year's French. Mayer's only previous appearance at this event saw him reach the semis in 2004 beating Gaudio and Stepanek along the way before losing to Chela and that may just prove the difference in a match where not much separates the two. |

| | Mayer has lost eight of his last nine matches incuding a couple at challenger level. The German had been suffering with a leg injury and had to withdraw last week with food poisoning, things are not looking good for Mayer at present. Mahut blows hot and cold, he has a big serve and is more than capable in the forecourt. On recent form the Frenchman would have to get the vote but Mayer is the better player from the baseline, Mayer needs to find a way of denying Mahut the net position if he is to progress from this one. |

| | Serve-volleyer Mahut was disappointing at Rotterdam and Zagreb, and was making amends in Indian Wells with two very good victories over Korolev and the flashy Almagro, before being humiliated by Federer in a complete and utter domination by the Swiss number one. That form was made to look slightly less than it did at the time because of Fed's disappointing exit in the semis to Mardy Fish, but I doubt there would have been much most players could have done against Roger that day where his serve was untouchable and his groundstrokes didn't miss. Mahut, having said that, must serve better in this match and must focus on getting a few more first balls into play to lift his confidence. He relies so heavily on the percentage of the first serve otherwise he is either left looking quite vulnerable at the net, or is bound to be outgunned from the baseline because that isn't his strength. Florian Mayer is only an average player but he does possess quite a heavy first serve. The second ball is slightly vulnerable and Mahut will be looking to be aggressive on that especially with some low slice approach shots which Mayer is unlikely to enjoy receiving. Neither player is exceptionally talented from the baseline, so tactics and variety will be interesting to watch. Mayer got the better of the Frenchman on his own soil back in October of 06, but Mahut has improved immensely since that tme. Mahut looks set to break his Miami drought having failed here twice before. |
