Isner has a massive serve but is extremely limited off the ground and has had just six outings on the dirt and although he has won three they have been against pretty lowly ranked opponents. Vagnozzi has enjoyed success at the futures level but as yet has been unable to make the transition to the higher grades. Although Vagnozzi's effort was useful against Horna, it is worth noting the Peruvian had come straight from a good showing at Rome for that match and was possibly a little fatigued.

Good for the discerned punter on 7-6 set results. I'd say, if Isner wins the 1st set 7-6 then expect the 2nd to be more like 6-3 or 6-4. If he loses the 1st 6-7 then expect him to win the 2nd 7-6. Something in this lines or a small punt on TAB Sportbet as described below!

Vagnozzi rarely ventures to the top level, but has put in promising qualifying performances in Estoril (l. in 3 to Marach), Rome (l. in 3 to Becker) and Hamburg (lost in third set tiebreak to Horna). He qualified for this event with wins over Burzi and the apparently talented compatriot Arnaboldi with ease, and couldn't have got a better draw in facing John Isner. The American has hardly ever played matches on clay until recent times - he lost in 3 tight sets to claydog Roitman, then got a few matches under his belt at challenger level including a good win over Capdeville in Bermuda. Isner has a massive serve and is very capable at net, but his movement is hindered to say the least and he will be mince meat against most players in a baseline exchange. The question is whether Vagnozzi has the skill to return the big man's serve, but interesting to note he has beaten Navarro-Pastor three times from as many attempts and the Spaniard has an effective serve and also enjoys rushing the net. The match comes down to how well Isner serves on this slow surface, but nevertheless you'd assume he'd still have an element of class to get him over the line.
