| | Really don't like Mathieu and I think Davydenko's form is on the up, so he's getting my backing. |

| | Davydenko overcame a danger match first up with Ernests Gulbis though it must be said the Latvian was extremely disappointing on serve and committed far too many unforced errors. The Russian comes into this event on the back of some really inconsistent form, though he'll enjoy the fact he leads the h2h over Mathieu 6-3 though the Frenchman has won 2 of the past 3 including the one on this terrain. Paul-Henri has also struggled in recent times but he got past the high-flying Lapentti who played so well in Cincinatti, Mathieu won 81% behind his first serve, a very respectable 57% on the second and produced 21 winners to his opponent's 7 in a dominant display after a tight first set. He has a big forehand, albeit technically imperfect and susceptible under pressure, but most impressive is his big double-fisted backhand and a penetrating serve that is likely to give the quality returning of Davydenko something to think about. You never know which Davy will turn up on the day, but either way Mathieu must look to accurately attack the vulnerable serve of the 4th seed which is what Gulbis failed to do. Unlike the youngster, Mathieu won't be overrawed by the occasion and although he has not always represented France with flying colours I'm prepared to back him here in the hope that that victory has given him a real injection of self-confidence. If he gets his first serve percentages into the mid-to-high 60s and keeps the errors to a minimum, he'll be right in this and certainly represents all the value. |
