 David Ferrer (ESP) d. Massimo Dell'Acqua (ITA) 6-2 7-6(3) at s-Hertogenbosch ATP (NED) - Grass, Round of 16 <<
Dell'Acqua increased his grass record to 6-1 for the year with another big serving performance against Fognini and he has now fired 57 aces in his four matches here (inc. qualies) at better than 1 per game. The Italian won 79% of his service points and that ability to win cheap points on this surface is a major one. Ferrer easily disposed of Huta Galung in round one but his overall grass record of 7-7 is nothing special, although he did reach round four at Wimbledon last year. Ferrer won the only previous meeting between the pair in some style 6-1 6-2 but that was on clay some seven years ago. Dell'Acqua's form on grass is by far his best and although he seldom plays away from the challenger and future events he possibly has more chance of causing an upset than the bookmakers are giving him credit. I'll risk a small wager on the Italian on his best surface against the superior Ferrer on his worst.

 Massimo Dell'Acqua (ITA) d. Fabio Fognini (ITA) 7-6(4) 6-2 at s-Hertogenbosch ATP (NED) - Grass, Round of 32 <<
Massimo Dell'Acqua is a pretty unknown player on the tour. He is 28 already without any big success. Still he is a tall guy with useful serve and enjoys fast surfaces as much as clay. His only ever title on the tour is on grass back in 2003 in Bristol where he beat young Nicolas Mahut in the semifinal. He did well for his standard in recent weeks reaching the final round in qualifying in Halle and now getting to the main draw in Holland. Fognini is a typical clay courter. He had a nice week last week getting to the late rounds in Warsaw on clay and that points out his unwillingness to play on grass. Dell'Acqua is unknown on the big stage being 472 in the world, but he is taller and more used to the grass courts. It is late for him to make a big break in the tour, but he deserves the trust to take the victory here against an opponent who obviously despises grass.

 Massimo Dell'Acqua (ITA) d. Fabio Fognini (ITA) 7-6(4) 6-2 at s-Hertogenbosch ATP (NED) - Grass, Round of 32 <<
Fognini has been struggling with injuries this year and has never played a match on grass. Massimo Dell'Acqua is largely a journeyman at 29 years of age, but has the perfect game for this surface as he has a big serve at 6'4" and is capable in the forecourt. In Halle, he took Hernych to 3 sets in qualifying (who tested Baghdatis Round 1), then in qualifying here he took out the talented shotmaker Ledovskikh before triumphing over Sijsling in 3 marathon sets firing down a high number of aces and winning a vast majority of the points on the first serve. Fognini is a flashy baseliner, but his game is more suited to the European claycourts and will definitely struggle to quell the serving and groundstroke power of his compatriot here.

 Massimo Dell'Acqua (ITA) d. Fabio Fognini (ITA) 7-6(4) 6-2 at s-Hertogenbosch ATP (NED) - Grass, Round of 32 <<
Dell´acqua came into this tournament after qualifying matches, beating Copil, Ledovskikh, Sijsling. Last week he made it to the last round of qualifications in Halle, but lost to Hernych in 3 sets. Fognini skipped 2 month because of injury and made a nice comeback last week reaching quarter finals in Warsaw. Fognini hasn´t played so many matches on grass and even if Dell´acqua is ranked more than 350 spots lower than his opponent I, like Carrick, expect him to win this match.

Nobody knows who this 29-year old Italian Dell'Acqua is, but I know he will be a huge favourite in this match. But, I fear that Fognini will retire after losing for much of the match.
