| | Del Potro gained an ideal lead-up to Wimbledon beating Santoro, Schuettler and Clement before losing to Ferrer in the semis of s'Hertogenbosch. He also competed well with Canas in the doubles of the same tournament, and the big Argentine will be keen to produce the game he knows he has on a surface that is very much conjucive. JM lost out to Roger in the second round here last year, but this level of opposition is not even comparable. Pavel Snobel, ranked 222, plays a majority of his tennis on the lower challenger circuit. Having said that, he has a respectable 10-9 record on the grass but only qualified here for the first time this year from many attempts, beating two big-serving types in Vemic and Dupuis before trouncing in-form claycourter Cipolla. He stands at 6'3" tall and has competed well against top 100 players in the past including wins over Tsonga, Bolelli and Lu as well as narrow defeats to Tipsarevic, Haase and Minar. Del Potro has a lot more firepower off the ground, and if he can restrict damage off his shaky second serve he should have a big upper hand here. In his past 20 matches against players ranked outside the top 100, Del Potro has come up trumps on 18 occasions and has superior experience at Grand Slam level and in best-of-5-set matches (7-7, vs Snobel's 1-2). He will be looking to get off to a good start at the All England Club, and while a win is almost definitely on the cards it's probably a match best left alone as a set to the Czech surprise packet wouldn't come as a total surprise. |
