| | Melzer won back to back matches for the first time on the main tour last week, making the quarters in Poertschach and going down to Kuitsyn in three sets, Luczak meanwhile was retiring with a hamstring problem in Casablanca. Hamstring problems tend to hang around and with the strength sapping clay to contend with, that is going to be a serious problem for the Aussie. |

| | Luczak had a cortizone injection after the hip hamstring injury and he is now considered fully fit. His hamstring was not torn, just swolen and he will need further care, but decided to go with the cortizone as he feels he can do well on Roland Garros and was willing to risk complications with the Grand Slam participation at stake. |

| | Luczak won this encounter back in 03 on the dirt and has only improved since that time. The Aussie has a decent serve, is very quick and is consistent as they come from the back of the court and also in the forecourt. Melzer, a left-handed equivalent of Luczak, ended a horror form patch with a couple of wins at his home tournament last week but has a poor 4-5 record at this event and has only won 4 of his past 11 Grand Slam matches. Luczak has superior stamina and unusually for an Australian has been bought up on the clay since a junior (as he was born in Poland), and has also won his past 3 against lefties. He has been suffering with form in recent weeks and tweeked a hamstring in Casablanca which would be of slight concern. If he's fit, he'll be the pick of the two but it might be advised to watch the first set before staking out on this one. |

| | Journeyman Aussie Luczak has lost four of his last five on clay but did make the semis of the Bermuda challenger last month. Hrbaty has lost ten of his last eleven including two recent first round challenger losses. The Slovak looks a shadow of the player that was a top twenty player a couple of years ago. He is now 30 and ranked 292 it shows just how the mind and body can fail in the space of just two years. |

| | Two hardcore claycourters going head to head here with both in fairly good form. Starace is rightly favourite for this match and shound outlast Luczak from the back in my opinion and if injuries don't play any part it should be a routine victory. Not a match my money will be seeing. Luczak 12/5 Starace 1/4. |

| | Consistent Aussie dirtballer Peter Luczak comes into this event fresh off a confidence-boosting performance in Bermuda having defeat the lively types Odesnik and Young before being outclassed by Japanese young gun Nishikori. He boasts an impressive 66% win record on the clay in the past 12 months and performed well here in 2004 winning three matches. Potito Starace, a 2007 quarter finallist suffering at the hands of one Rafael Nadal, has been battling a hip injury since his challenger win in Napoli and suffered a marathon loss to veteran Lapentti at the Monte Carlo masters. His serve struggled late in that match, and the Italian is not overly potent on the second delivery so the counter-attacking baseliner Luczak will look to make good inroads there. Starace won their previous h2h in Acapulco a couple of months ago - but the match lasted over an half and a half contrary to the scoreline and Luczak uncharacteristically made a few too many unforced errors in the long baseline exhcnages. Much of the same expected here, but the Aussie's increased confidence as well as the fitness concerns for Starace probably make this a no bet on the Italian, with the Aussie the only value in this two-horse race. |

| | A tough first up assignment for the top ranked player in the qualifying draw Peter Luczak, who has drawn the more than capable big serving Wesley Moodie of South Africa. Moodie enjoys these court conditions and will have the Aussie on the stretch for a vast maojrity of his service games. But Luczak does have the advantage as soon as a rally develops, with his steadiness off both wings and his superior court speed a concern for Moodie. Luczak has not performed as well as we would have expected on the harder courts of America in the past, but will be aiming to make the main draw here. His own serve has improved now to the point where he'd be confident of holding his own games to force this into tiebreakers, after all Moodie's groundstrokes are not overly devastating nor does he have much variety and unpredictability. |
