safin dominated in the second set. you can't judge his performance against korolev and draw parallels. because in the same tournament, he beat tomas berdych in straight sets, playing excellent tennis. and berdych is a top 10 player.

Safin has the bigger groundies and a much heavier serve that Lisnard. His mental fragility is well documented but it is almost unthinkable he would lose to a player of Lisnard's limited ability.

Safin took a tie-breaker victory off Korolev in Hamburg. Lisnard demonstrated a similar result against Korolev in the qualifying rounds. This match will not be easy for Safin and Lisnard is worth a small risk.

 Marat Safin (RUS) d. Jean-Rene Lisnard (MON) 6-7(5) 6-1 6-3 6-2 at French Open GS (FRA) - Clay, Round of 128 <<
Lisnard has rode his luck enough in qualifying - he got a retirement from his injured opponent in the first round, beat clayhater Sirianni 10-8 third set in the second round, then repeated the dose with a come-from-behind win capturing the 3rd 8-6 in the third set against the inconsistent Korolev. Prior to that, the Monacon had lost 7 of his previous 9 matches at this event and to fairly sub-standard opposition. Safin, though not the player he once was, is still good enough to cause the occasional stir due to his massive weaponry. If his mind and body is right (the two biggest questions with Marat these days), he has the big serve and the accurate and powerful groundies to force Lisnard way too far behind the baseline to make a presence. He ousted Korolev, Cilic and Berdych before taking Moya to 3 sets in Hamburg, which will give him some much-needed confidence here. He was a SFist here back in 2002, and though I doubt he can repeat that, he certainly looks in very little danger of even dropping a set here so we'll go the 3-0.

Safin in 3. His woes are woes but they're not losing to Lisnard over best of 5 set woes. Safin will take this in my book.

Jean-Rene Lisnard (MON) d. Evgeny Korolev (RUS) 5-7 6-4 8-6 at French Open GS (FRA) - Clay, Qualifying Rnd <<
Korolev has been in fair form on the clay this year, wins over Andreev, Haase, Gimeno-Traver, Soderling and a third set tiebreak loss to Safin are some way superior to Lisnards winning exploits on the futures circuit. It is three years since Lisnard was last in the first round proper and I don't think he'll make it this time.
