| | PARIS (AP)—France captain Guy Forget has called up Richard Gasquet as a backup player to face Germany in the first round of the Davis Cup next week.
Gasquet joined Julien Benneteau, Michael Llodra, Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on the team that will play Germany in Toulon on March 5-7, the French tennis federation said Thursday.
France, which has won the competition nine times, leads 5-2 in its head-to-head with Germany. France won their last meeting in a first-round match in 2006.
Gasquet missed the French Open and Wimbledon last year after being suspended following a doping test that showed traces of cocaine. He was cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in December.
Gasquet has a 5-6 record in Davis Cup.

Richard Gasquet, now working with Argentine coach Gabriel Markus, tells L'Equipe he is playing on clay in South America this month instead of indoors in Europe to improve his chances of making an impact at the French Open.
Gasquet, who has never been past the third round at his home Grand Slam, was unable to play Costa do Sauipe last week because of a rib injury but is taking part in Buenos Aires next week.
"I came here to play on clay because it's here you construct points, where you accquire the mentality to play long points and close matches," he said.
"I want to come ready to Roland Garros. I need two or three months to get back to where I was. I know I can get back to the semifinals of a Grand Slam, and who knows what could come next." |

| | Richard Gasquet pulled out of the Brasil Open at the last minute ahead of his scheduled first round match with local journeyman Ricardo Hocevar, the Frenchman citing a back injury as the reason behind his withdrawal.
He was apparently practising on Saturday when he felt a similar pinch to that he suffered in his Australian Open campaign en route to a first round loss to Mikhail Youzhny.
He is replaced in the main draw by lucky loser Carlos Berlocq. |

| | Richard Gasquet has officially confirmed that his new coach is 39 year old Argentine Gabriel Markus.
Markus said; "A few days ago, my phone rang and I heard the voice of Richard Gasquet. He told me he wanted me to become his coach. I was surprised at his call. There are lots of very good coaches in France. But I remembered and we had a very interesting discussion. He is very keen to play well and told me he wanted to change the habits he had in France. It seems to me to be a attractive option."
Markus was a claycourt lover back in his day turning pro in 1989 until 1997, he made a fleeting return to doubles in 2008 but is mainly known for his role in getting Nicolas Massu to the heights of his career, but is also still currently with Vassallo Arguello. Gasquet has apparently said there is no problem with the co-charge idea. |
