| | I'm going to go with Ventura as todays dog. Schuettler can't maintain top level play for three sets. |

| | Schuettler is at least a regular on the grass which cannot be said about Ventura who gives the impression his expectations are low with no prep for this event and a 1-5 grass record for the Spaniard gives that thought plenty of credence. I would have to favour Schuettler who has made the fourt round in the past but his having lost seven of his last eight on grass I won't be parting with any cash. |

| | The h2h is split at 1-apiece, with Ventura winning a few months ago after losing a one-sided first set. In that match, the German struggled on serve and couldn't make any inroads on the Spaniard's first ball, but a few things have changed since then. Schuettler, in his lead-up matches last week in s'Hertogenbosch, won 90 and 72% on the first serve against Berrer and Del Potro respectively, and was not broken a single time in the total 5 sets 3 of which went to a tiebreak. The former Australian Open finallist, no doubt in the twilight of his career, seems a little rejuvinated and has a big edge in grass pedigree given his all-time 23-21 record and wins over the likes of Rusedski, Soderling, Nalbandian, Kiefer and J Johansson admittedly not in the past few years. Ventura is a traditional claycourter has only played on it 6 times yielded a 1-5 output, lost in qualifying here in 04 and was smashed by Mayer in the main draw of 2005. Having not played a grass match in the past 2 years, one would think his expectations are at an extreme minimum not to mention he is 1-5 at Grand Slam level. Schuettler is pretty consistent from the back of the court and has the artillery on serve to take up superior court position, and it's likely his Spanish opponent will attempt to play a metre behind the baseline which is going to prove his downfall. Schuettler has some form behind him and appears the certainty of the men's draw for Day 2. |

| | Verdasco can be very hard to catch on his day and is prone to roller-coaster results, but there is no doubting at his best he is as good as they come. The forehand is dangerous, the backhand is stylish and this guy covers the court as good as any which probably explains his great h2h record over countryman David Ferrer. He couldn't buy a trick earlier in the year, but has recently proved he is very much a player who craves momentum as he stunned Moya and Lapentti in Rome before knocking off Youzhny and Ferrer in Hamburg (lost only to Federer). He is mentally one of the more vulnerable players in the top 30, but in a first round match out on court 17 that is unlikely to be a factor. Ventura is an honest claycourter who is pretty steady from the back, but faces a tough ask because he is outguned in pretty much every aspect apart from maybe the serve. Recent losses to Gimeno-Traver, Montanes, de Bakker and Junqueira suggest he just isn't ready to take the next step (mind you he is already 27) and Verdasco should be able to dictate terms from the back. Verdasco has points to defend from last year's R16 effort (beat Ferrer and Tursunov along the way) and will have no issues going one step closer to that here. |

| | Verdasco to me, too powerful too much variety too consistent. Ventura is a lightweight with an excuse for a serve. Good flashy player quite adept to clay but nowhere near dangerous enough to finish a lot of points against Verdasco. |
