| | | | | | May 19 2008 05:22:18 thedestroyer9 (Mod) 190 (2918) Posts 1994 (9315) Aces Login to give Aces | | Spadea won the only previous meeting between the pair last year on carpet, but faces his nemesis surface here on the clay and an opponent who craves for this time of year. Navarro-Pastor, who is extremely versatile for a European bought up on this surface with his uncommon liking for approaching the net particularly behind a decent serve, won Meknes earlier in the year (d. Martin, Kukushkin, Vanek) and made the final of Bogota (d. Vassallo, Puerta, Kendrick). He then struggled for form after that, but got back to his best last week in Aarhus with wins over Coria and Todero before succumbing in a tight affair with the capable Prodon. Spadea, who has been struggling with niggling foot and viral injuries and has a horrid 36% winning record on the dirt in the past 3 seasons, has lost 8 of his past 10 matches and his momentum is shot to bits at the moment. He may enjoy the target of Navarro at net due to the accuracy and consistency with which he executes the groundies, but inevitably his confidence is nowhere to be seen and his movement on the dirt is still a big concern. He is obviously playing this event due to the weakness of the draw aside from one or two players and the need to get as much fitness under his belt before the French, but unfortunately he has run into a clay dog who should prove too solid and quick from the baseline. Navarro-Pastor in 2. |
| | | | | | | | | | May 18 2008 23:59:51 d.carson (Mod) 128 (1166) Posts 505 (2349) Aces Login to give Aces | | I quite like Vince here at odds of 11/8. He has been struggling with foot injuries this year but has to be fancied ahead of the serve-volleying Spaniard who plays mainly at lower level. Two steady baseliners in these 2 but Spadea has the bigger arsenal at his disposal and I'll take him at odds against and will in all liklihood be able to get Navarro-Pastor at odds against aswell in-play. Navarro-Pastor 5/8 Spadea 11/8. |
| | | | | | | | | | May 18 2008 23:41:16 sdtoot 2 (4) Posts 0 (3) Aces Login to give Aces | | Not too sure how serious Navarro will treat this match since his only route into Roland Garros will be via the qualifying rounds from Tuesday. If he wins, his 2nd round match in this tournament will probably be on Wednesday. In normal circumstances I would give him the edge on clay over Spadea but it may come down to how much he really wants to play in Paris. |
| | | | | | | | | | May 18 2008 02:32:55 bullet (Mod) 91 (1948) Posts 310 (3093) Aces Login to give Aces | | American veteran Spadea was a finalist here way back in 1998 but a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. Spadea has lost eight of his last ten and the consistent basliner is not the force he once was. Navarro-Pastor is not your typical clay courter and he can be seen at net as often as not, the Spaniard has made two challenger finals on clay this year winning one. The pair met toward the backend of last season on carpet when Spadea came out on top. This may well be close. |

Tip: The difference in Match Rating between two players represents the average number of service games that separate them in a set of tennis as predicted by the Insight Model. Lower Rating Handle values indicate that the predicted rating is more speculative and that the player’s ‘true’ form may be significantly different from the models statistical prediction.
