| | Newport Beach resident Alexa Glatch was excited to receive a wildcard to the US Open event, but that excitement quickly turned to fear when she realised she would face defending champ and 9-time Slam winner Serena Williams. Despite rankings, the younger of the Williams' sisters is still the supreme finger in womens tennis, and she comes into this event supremely confident even without lead-in match fitness which has become a customary feature of both sisters' preparations over the years. After young Alexa lost to Serena in Miami earlier in the season, she starred for the Americans in Fed Cup but has since struggled to qualify for events and recent losses to battler veteran Osterloh and the out-of-touch and fallen Krajicek would raise a lot of doubts as to her credentials here. Glatch lacks the movement and baseline consistency to take advantage on any "off day" Serena could suffer, and those younger generation power players have never fared too well against the champ especially on this surface and on this continent. |
