I honestly think some of you guys are watching a different match. Yes, Monfils has had break points, but Rafa has been in command of this match from start to (what will soon be) finish. He is not playing well enough to win this tournament, but there was never any way that Monfils was ever going to get close to him. The odds should have been (and I was expecting them to be) closer to 1/16!

Nadal had 2 BP and took both while Monfils had 4 and lost all of them. I've played Monfils live but it might be a wrong decision. I did it when he had 3 BP in 1st set for odds 5.5...

Usually there is no value to be had backing Nadal in the early rounds of tournaments, but this match is the exception. At 1/6 admittedly my winnings will not be huge, but in a match which he really should win without any trouble (why does anybody think Gael Monfils can beat him?) this really is easy money.

I avoid this all together. I don't think Monfils can disturb Nadal too seriously, but there is a motivation issue, a focus issue (DC-final), a fatigue issue and an injury issue that I wouldn't feel well about if backing Nadal. Monfils has some good weapons, plenty of motivation and the home crowd going mad for him.

Nadal wasn't playing that well in 2nd set, it looked like serra was making Nadal step up.

i mean Monfils is paying what 5ish, you wont be losing much by putting a small amount on him

@lilboi (mod) what i say is my opinion how can't i have an opinion on other peoples useless information, unlike other people who bet large amounts of money that none of you people will ever see. If monfils wins at least one set i will pay for your website to be made of gold. Please do not post useless facts, there are reasons why players are number 1 in the world. Even though i can not stand rafa.

@alexandru_mg3, seriously mate, its his opinion and I for one have won more money listening to his opinion then yours. So please save your useless posts for elsewhere. I am sick of reading it, his allowed to his own opinion and unlike most here he backs it up with his own stats and analysis. There is no mislead or what, people can read his insight and decide for themselves if his arguments are good or otherwise. Final warning for you, anyone more unwarranted crap about destroyer or any other poster will just be deleted.

Your tip and post has been deleted. Get a brain and use it before you post. What Destroyer has done for this site is more than you'll ever do in your life. A majority of TI users love his analysis and realise that in the end it is his opinion and use his insights accordingly to work out yourself who will win.

Tsongas best level is beyond Monfils for a considerable distance. Can you count how many times did Nadal lose a tennis match in Paris? In the city of Paris? It must be his favorite place to play tennis. Monfils is out

@destroyer: the single improvement, for everybody here, is to predict correctly as many matches he can.
All the rest serve to nothing.
So all I wanted to say with my message is: please don't create confusions here - indicating Monfils, in along and detail explanation: could be some people here that could think that this could really happen...
You are the guy with the biggest number of Aces , if you create confusions like "Monfils to beat Nadal" is not so good for the people here...

Monfils is clearly a happier player when in France and seems to raise his game. However, for me he has a great deal to learn about big match temperament. He seems too flashy and wanting to impress rather than being clinical. Murray destroyed Monfils recently who I consider to be a very similar player to Nadal during rallies. Yes, Nadal was beaten by Simon but he Simon deserved to win in the end due to his tenancity. I don;t believe Monfils has the same tenancity nor consistency. Nadal on this surface will hopefully be putting huge spin on the ball and giving Gael a master class in point building and patience. Gael is toof lashy and will go for the early kill which will play into Nadal's hands. Good odds for Rafa against a real up and coming player.

I like monfils, and with home ground advantage he should put up a good fight for the crowd. However Nadal is a consistent quality player, that should allow him to dismiss of the athletic Frenchman relatively easily

Nadal will be too good for Monfils in the baseline exchanges and will finish him off in straight sets. You cannot rely purely on a big power service to win you matches, ok monfils has a good forehand also, but Nadal's is better and his backhand has dramtically improved. I think this match will be 2-0 to Nadal.

Gael monfis will have the crowd with him he is a good competitor can play some really goos shots at time and he is a very versalite player who can definetely challenge nadal in the indoor court ,also nadal looks a bit tired after tires after such a big season and the points that has to defend wont have an impact on his ranking

There has been some matches that I've seen and thought "OK, it needs a bit more extra effort, but there's certainly some pace and zip in the court to be had". Then others I've thought "there is way too much give". Definitely brings Nadal into contention that can't be disputed, but I would also say that the powerful and SMART servers will still get good value for money where cheap points and short returns are concerned, but may just need to remain a bit more patient than usual in the baseline exchanges. Monfils has the defensive and offensive qualities to exploit that, so at the odds, why not.

very slow this year, even more so than last perhaps. definitely slower than what indoor carpet used to be several years ago. which is a shame, gives nadal a huge advantage over everyone else otherwise he wouldnt stand a chance. hopefully he'll be sent home tomorrow though

@Denver - it is still an indoor carpet surface, it is by no means slow, it's just not playing as quick as previous years. There is a tiny bit more time to queue up the shots, that's all.

Nadal backers would have been pleased but not overly impressed with his win over local Frenchman Florent Serra, a man who never had any weaponry to threaten the world number one. King Rafa swiped the first set in 27 minutes before Serra forced him to save a break point early in the third and started making Nadal play more balls. His forehand was working nicely, better than the backhand anyway, whilst his serve was effective but didn't land the first one as much as he would like to later in the tournament. Monfils delighted the home crowd with an easy-as-you-like victory over Juan Monaco, the flambuoyant youngster producing 12 aces and winning all but 2 points behind his first serve as he literally dominated proceedings against the out-of-touch Argentine. Monfils loves to entertain and only gets spurred on by local support - here back in 04 he stretched then number 3 Hewitt all the way, he made the final of Metz in 05 beating top 20 players Gasquet and Hrbaty along the way, backed up to reach the final of Lyon (bt Gaudio, Grosjean, l to Roddick) and of course this year made the semis of the French Open losing in 4 sets to Federer. He is very much a complete player apart from his lack of big-time experience and occasional lairising - Gael has a very big serve, can attack with a huge forehand and steady backhand, but is more than capable of standing two metres back and really forcing his opponent to work overtime to win a point. Forget the last two meetings - they are irrelevant - Monfils was very young and hadn't realised the potential that he has this year, and it was on the clay terrain where Nadal reigns supreme. The number one is still fresh from his leg injury concerns sustained in Madrid, and one wonders that given the fact he has already qualified for Shanghai whether he will have one eye on the upcoming Davis Cup final versus the Argentines. The players to beat Nadal on quick terrains - Simon, Murray, Djokovic, Davydenko, Roddick, Tsonga - all have fantastic defensive attributes but importantly are very efficient when they need to step up the attack, not to mention a majority of those guys aren't afraid to move in when the time is right which is definitely something you need to do against the Spaniard. At the odds, Monfils is well worth a stab and perhaps Mr. Monfils hasn't yet given up all hope of a Shanghai berth but would need a title.

The court is carpet and conducive to rafa's big backswings on the forehands. He can use his xtreme western grip to his advantage by putting xtra amount of work on the ball as the ball sits up nicely giving rafa the necessary time to deal wid it.Monfils has a good defence but he needs a highly attacking game plan to get the better of the world no.1 .Nadal will sail into the quarters wid a 2 set victory, although i do believe that 1 set is going to be tight.

Happy to go huge on nadal here. The only concern which I do have in doing so, is that at the back of my mind 'monfils' i believe joins that small band of player with the likes of del potro, simon and perhaps tsonga that can trouble the top 4 players in the world who incidentally like the premier league top 4 are a country mile ahead of the rest in my opinion.

Good point by Rafa..the ball will sit up on these slower courts and beg to be hit and Nadal will oblige. Monfils would have to play his best match and Nadal one of his worst for the Frenchman to triumph here. I just can't see Monfils staying in the points long enough to trouble Nadal for any length of time. Nadal's run won't end here I don't think. The only thing in Monfils's favour is an excellent record of 9/3 on indoor surfaces this year. I don't think it'll be enough.

Monfils has had some decent results of late over the indoor season, but as always found it hard against Rafa losing both matches in straight sets. The only thing i will back is Rafa 2-1 in sets just for some value an then makes it more intreseting for me.But Rafa will prevail, espically because the courts are playing on the slow side for an indoor surface
