ill take simon here, i think korolev poses a slightly worrying threat given his form last week, but with simon defending his title and with the roll he's been on lately, i think i would be a lot more worried if i bet against simon

Simon is a hard working fighter and i expect his defensive counter punching on clay to return the heavy strokes of his opponent with some flourish. He is defending his title and i expert him to go far. He fights for every points irregardless of the situation of opponent and has shown he has the talent to challenge the upper tier of players. With this in consideration, he should be able to dispatch of Korolev fairly comfortably as his opponent is fairly indecisive at key occassions

Simon is the reigning champion at Bucharest so seeing him go out first round against a player he beat here in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 last year would be a big surprise. Gilles has been playing well on all surfaces this year. Last 6 months Korolev is 5-10 while Simon is 24-12 in match statistics. Says something about their current form. Gilles has better %ages behind his own serve, and a better return game.

A perfect starting match for the defending champion Gilles Simon who last year beat this very player Korolev en route to the title. The Frenchman has only improved in leaps and bounds since that time, whilst the Russian continues to be extremely inconsistent and his flaws exposed at the top level. Simon has a big tank, moves well, hits very consistently and can change direction on the ball with ease, while Korolev has the bigger serve and heavier groundstrokes however his imperfect technique and some poor shot selection often undoes his good work. He made the semis of Dusseldorf just days ago which will bode him well for this match, however on this terrain he has never beaten a player inside the top 30 and this season has suffered losses to Monfils, Rochus, Davydenko, Santoro and Kohlschreiber all of whom are able to defend stoutly. Simon will be keen to end the year just the way he has coasted through it mid-season and should have far too many answers for Evgeny provided his first ball percentage - which can occasionally wane - is around the 55-60 mark.

Korolev reached the second round of the US Open losing to Monfils, he also lost out to Beck in a Challenger event in Germany last week at the semi-final stage. I like Korolev, he's only 20 years of age and just needs smoothing around the edges a bit in order to push on. He has a big serve and a big forehand and doesn't lack confidence moving up the court either. His double-hander is a bit problematic sometimes as he occasionally leaves it short, but he's learning and he's a confident lad. Gilles Simon lost a tight 5 setter to Del Potro last week and he'll be looking to bounce back in the first round here. He leads the H2H 1-0 after a win last year on the clay in Bucharest. The Frenchman, world No.16, couldn't have asked for a much better year and he'll be hoping to push for a top 10 spot soon enough. He possesses a good serve himself but often struggles with the percentages. Also like Korolev, he's very quick around the court, but he's not as offensive as the Russian. Korolev likes to paint the lines and take risks whereas Simon is happy to play out the longer rallies. Gilles has by far the better backhand (similar style to Murray's) and gets the credits there but this is going to be a hard match for the 2nd seed in my opinion. I like siding with players who take the match to their opponent which Evgeny will do here. I'd just like to lay down this marker now and say that I think Korolev will be a solid top 20 performer within a couple of years. I'm going with him here at massive looking odds.
