the stats suggest that almagro is the way to go here...though the indian is a bit of an enigma...his descent down the rankings and the way he toweled up the opposition in the qualifying rounds make me a little nervous...that said, the destroyers comments below are enough to tip the scales for me in favour of almagro...but ill look with interest at what people have to say about the indian over the next couple of hours

Note: Almagro's opponent changed from Gonzales/Hernandez?! to Devvarman after early tips (at least the first nine).

Almagro is a major threat on clay and has traded it off against the best of them. His aggressive approach to taking on opponents especially on clay makes his play somewhat unorthodox on this surface yet very effective. He should be able to force the error out of Gonzalez by dictating the rallies and moving gonzlez who likes to stay behind the baseline.

This should be easy for Almagro if he is motivated and fit. As he is the favourite for the tournament hopefully the prize money will motivate him. Almagro 2-0.

Almagro's fitness looked to be returning at the US Open and is starting to look in better shape and his ability to perform with limited preparation shows an increase in confidence. The Spaniard is rated one of the better claycourters in the world and he's not lost in the first round of such an event since this tourny last year (l. to Bolelli). He has a heavy serve, hits very aggressively from the back of the court and his struggles on this terrain have come only against the elite. Gonzalez is a typical dirtballer who possesses only a modest serve, hits consistently off the back and is happy to play a metre or so behind the baseline, he has lost 4 straight matches on the terrain however (l. to Crivoi, Hartfield, Zverev, Andreev) and the confident seemingly shot. The Spaniard will have it all his own way and avoiding a host of unforced errors will coast through to the secound round in a field he'll feel quietly confident of besting here this week.

ive watched some Hernandez matches and really impressed me. good player from the baseline and has also a good serve but his figthing spirit is what i liked more. Almagro is fav here for sure but i dont like bettin favs after great tournaments. u never know if they prefer to loose the match and go rest to their home countries. so again small bet in the dog
