I can't pick out a winner. In my eyes (and brain) it's a 50/50-match, so I am jumping over this bet.

I can’t get the image of Querrey falling apart physically last week against Simon out of my mind. I could see if Simon was in the same state, but he was not, and this raises some fitness questions for me about Sam. You never know what you are going to get these days with Safin, and I probably should stay away from this one, but sometimes you have to go with the gut.

Safin's poor efforts in Bastad were simply a let down after a successful Wimbledon. Querrey plods around the court and will have to win some rallies to win the game which he cannot do. Safin is back in good form and should have the incentive to progress in this tourno.

I was a little surprised watching Querry against Gilles to see that the big fellow has a presentable backcourt game including some good return work. He was in the end of the match a little worn out so i dont know if his fittness is really forcible. Sure, Safin has a better allround game, likes the surface and should be more focused than in Bastad. But for me odds under 1.80 do not cover the risk here going with him agains Big Sam.

Safin. You are mad to bet big on it though, this is round 1.
Why do I always get inferior odds to everyone else?

With Safin's semifinal performance at Wimbledon in 2008, he became the fourth active player to reach the semifinals in all four grand slams joining Roger Federer, David Nalbandian, and Novak Djokovic.....As we all probably know, when Safin is mentally focused, he possesses a very powerful all-round game that is capable of defeating the best players in the world on virtually any surface. Many people note his powerful two-handed backhand to be his best shot, seeing as he can unleash lethal backhands both cross-court and down-the-line.....So all we need to hope for as always, is for a mentaly focused Safin....If no racquets are broken then we probably wont see his best game but still he should surely win then......lol just kidding.......umm yes, this is his favorite surface, having two grand slams on hard courts and Querrey is simply not on a level of a (focused) Safin

Marat back to some good form with his run at Wimbledon. Doesn't deserve such high odds.

lost to nishikori hewitt and berdych indicates to me that Querrey has problems with good servers and strong attacking minded players with a bit more experience than him(nishikori is just here as attacking player example)Safin after lose to starace surely is more fresh here and with new coach (this year) will be force here as well as it has been on Wimbledon.

perhaps he meant the entire hardcourt swing on the continent of north america, all similar playing surfaces and conditions. There are several ghosts on this forum, mostly lurker profiles who keep referencing you by name funnily.

hard draw for Marat. Sam is solid on hardcourt, but Safin if he wants to make a serious come back and push for top 10 again needs to win this kind of match

Querry a bit unfortunate to see Safin in the first round. Sam has had very good results on the North American hardcourts, but I'd say his record is inflated, since hasn't really beaten anyone of too much quality. Marat has talent talent to beat anyone on a given day, and I'll go with him in a battle of mental midgets.

querrey has been solid on hard this year winning the las vegas and making a solid run at indianapolis. While safin is on a 4 game losing streak on hard and is not his best surfaces.
