Benneteau was in some good form prior to and at the French Open, but was majorly exposed on the quicker grass surface where he won just one match against the similarly unsuited Bolelli. Benneteau has a sound defense and is capable of pulling off the occasional miracle forehand stroke, but is far too vulnerable on serve and is prone to days of high unforced error counts. Gonzalez is superior is nearly every department - a bigger serve, a whopping forehand and variety off the backhand side - but as we know he can be inconsistent and mentally off at times. The Chilean has posted some of his more memorable wins on this terrain admittedly a few years ago, but has a knack of turning things on in the big stage something not heard of with Julien. Gonzo hasn't been serving overly well, but will get a good chance to atone for that here against a guy who is not exactly known for his returning abilities. The match is on the racket of Gonzy and given he doesn't experience one of his erratic days, he will far too much firepower for a player who I don't believe is quite up to this echelon. |

Gonzalez has the big serve aswell and these odds are fully justified and I expect to be considering him in the next round. Staight sets. |

Every time he lost to players ranked below him, (Stepanek, Ferrero, Gabashvili and Fleishman!!) especially Gaba and Fleishman were both well below 100 and both pulled a huge upset....Considering his form this year, he should smash Benneteau but im just trying to point out that Gonzo is worthy skiping in first rounds, especially after a couple of weeks of inactivity.....Benneteau in fact does have straight set wins on hard courts this year against Hewitt, Ferrer, Tsonga, Almagro......Thats my opinion....What does anyone else think?

He's had a good rest and has been in reasonable form the last few months. I would think the faster surface will allow him to rip a lot of winners against Benneteau, whereas on clay, whilst Gonzo's results were half decent this year he could get drawn into impatience in long rallies. |
